Ravishing red rambutans

The rambutan is definitely one of my favourite fruits. Save for the hairy exterior, the plump, white juicy and sweet flesh always makes me want more.

I remember that when i was younger, i used to bite into the shell to get to the flesh. One of my least favourite bit of getting the fruit as the soft spikes usually tickle my mouth and the husk leaves a sour-bitter aftertaste. Nowadays, i just use my nails to make a slight indentation and then pull it apart.

My maternal grandmother's place used to have 2 huge rambutan trees each bearing quite a load every year. Now left with 1 and since only my grandmother and aunt are left there, we dont really get much. Sometimes the fruits from the lower parts of the tree are trimmed and harvested, otherwise, they're left to drop at the end of their cycle.

This year, we're in luck and my grandma's neighbour's gardener came about recently and she got him to help cut the fruits off the tree. And as the weather's been pouring quite a bit, this year's harvest is apparently abundant and very very nice.

That said, i gave Joey and his mum quite a bit that night we got the huge bag of fruits. I was still mentally telling myself how pretty they looked this year, all so fresh and red, none of the spikes curled up and dried.

Obviously, since there was a huge bag, i didnt think to eat any then, so 2 days later, after Joey's mum mentioned that she wanted more (apparently they were really really good), i went to the back to get some. Alas, there was NOTHING left.

How depressing.

I got mum to ring up grandma and it seems like there's some 30 left, so very fortunately, my aunt came over with some 10 plump little red things for me. That said, they're untouched, left in the fridge with a tag saying that they're mine and that no one ought to eat them up. More for my paternal grandma than anyone else actually, since no one else in the family really eats them.

Yea. I suppose you figured, remember the initial huge bag? Well, yup she ate them ALL BY HERSELF. At least 40 of them in a mere 2 days (within a short time span too according to my maid). Not that they're bad in general, but fruits =fructose = blood sugar = bad for diabetes.

It's such a chore trying to tell her otherwise when she is so stubborn about it. Just a week ago, she made my maid go buy sugar to make agar-agar (which consists of mad amounts of sugar). I'm getting so tired at nagging at her for her horrible dietary habits. Sigh.

Oh well. Off i go to get some nice little rambutans to comfort me. Mmm.
